Set in the heart of Africa, Red Knot Racing has launched TRAVERSE GRVL, a five-day gravel cycling event through the rugged backcountry of northern Tanzania, from the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro to the shores of Lake Natron.
Taking place on May 21-28, 2025, the Tanzania event also marks a new addition to the Gran Fondo World Tour Gravel Series calendar, as the Gran Fondo World Tour (GFWT) expands its footprint on the African continent.
According to the GFWT team… ‘Since its inception in 2016, our series has continually grown, offering the most sought-after destinations for gravel enthusiasts. Traverse Tanzania GRVL represents a significant step forward in providing tailored, all-inclusive events that cater to gravel travellers seeking adventure and challenge.’
Dani Buyo, CEO of GFWT, said “At Gran Fondo World Tour, we are thrilled to welcome Tanzania as a new destination, completing our portfolio of cycling and gravel experiences. This marks a shift beyond pure competition, delivering full-scale adventure to the gran fondo community.”
TRAVERSE GRVL Tanzania race creator and director at Red Knot Racing, Brett Harrison, said “TRAVERSE is about experiencing a truly untamed Africa.
“We’ve taken everything participants love about our five-day mountain bike race and created a broader adventure that will appeal to gravel riders.”
TRAVERSE offers an opportunity for gravel cyclists to experience northern Tanzania’s diverse landscapes. Participants will encounter varied terrain, with wildlife viewing, all while immersing themselves in the culture of Tanzania’s Maasai people.
The five-day cycling adventure is part of a larger, all-inclusive eight-day experience. Participants are provided with airport pickup and drop-off, accommodation, all meals and drinks, logistics, park fees, and medical services.
Brett Harrison added “Red Knot offers a seamless and unforgettable adventure that allows racers to focus on the experience and the challenge, and nothing more.”
