IRONMAN has launched a new event in California with the addition of the IRONMAN 70.3 Northern California triathlon.
The inaugural event is set to take place on Sunday, August 16, 2026, with a swim, bike, and run course that will guide athletes through the heart of Redding and the surrounding Shasta Cascade region.
Framed by Mount Shasta and Mount Lassen, Redding has access to 200 miles of trails, two major lakes, and the Sacramento River running through town. IRONMAN notes that the city’s strong recreation culture and welcoming community make it an ideal location for the newest IRONMAN 70.3 event. General registration for the new event opens on November 13, 2025.

The IRONMAN 70.3 Northern California triathlon will begin with a sunrise 1.2-mile swim in the waters of Whiskeytown Lake, surrounded by forested hills and clear skies.
Athletes will then transition to a 56-mile bike course that winds through scenic Shasta County, featuring rolling terrain, panoramic views, and smooth roads ideal for fast racing due to a net elevation loss across the course.
The 13.1-mile run course will take athletes along the Sacramento River Trail, crossing the Sundial Bridge and looping through recently revitalized riverfront parks before culminating in a finish line experience near the heart of Redding’s downtown.
The 2026 IRONMAN 70.3 Northern California triathlon will offer qualifying slots to the 2027 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship.
