Pope Leo XIV to greet Giro d’Italia riders as they pass through Vatican City

Pope Leo XIV will greet the Giro d’Italia peloton on Sunday, June 1, as riders pass through Vatican City during the final stage of the 2025 edition.

The Vatican section of the route honours the memory of Pope Francis and follows a proposal by Cardinal José Tolentino de Mendonça, prefect of the Dicastery for Culture and Education. The initiative has been developed in collaboration with the Governatorate of Vatican City State and Athletica Vaticana.

The 3km segment inside the Vatican marks a symbolic moment ahead of the Jubilee of Sport, scheduled for June 14–15. The project began in October 2021, following Athletica Vaticana’s certification as an official member of the UCI.

The final stage of the Giro d’Italia 108 will start at the Baths of Caracalla, with riders entering Vatican City via the Petriano Entrance.
