Event organiser Ultra X has announced a new partnership with FLOWBIO and Science in Sport (SiS) to deliver a personalised hydration offering at its Ultra X Wales and Ultra X England events this summer.
The initiative will see Ultra X become the first endurance trail series to offer what is being billed as… ‘race-ready hydration strategies based on real-time sweat data.’
The move is aimed at addressing hydration as a key area of performance that may often be overlooked in ultra-endurance racing.
FLOWBIO’s sweat sensor, marketed as the most accurate of its kind, measures an athlete’s real-time sodium and fluid loss to create a personal hydration profile. Data is tracked during training sessions, enabling runners to understand their hydration needs ahead of race day.
The FLOWBIO app uses this data to guide an athlete’s intake of water and electrolytes based on their individual physiology and the specific demands of each Ultra X stage. Science in Sport is providing the hydration products to support this new approach.

According to the partners, ultra-distance runners often under-consume fluids and sodium by two to three times relative to what they lose, leading to chronic dehydration that can impact performance and recovery.
FLOWBIO’s Advanced Hydration Intelligence (AHi) system will be used at scale for the first time during Ultra X Wales and Ultra X England. Athletes will need to purchase a FLOWBIO Sensor to access their sweat profile and tailored strategy.
Ultra X events are held in remote and often extreme locations such as the Jordanian desert and the Scottish Highlands. The series includes distances from a 12km single-stage race to 220km over five stages, with runners carrying their own kit and Ultra X providing water, medical support and shared campsites.
FLOWBIO was founded to address hydration strategy in endurance sport and its wearable technology is designed to replace guesswork with data. Science in Sport, a long-standing player in performance nutrition, is providing hydration products to complement the personalised plans for athletes.
