The LA28 Organising Committee has confirmed that triathlon events at the 2028 Olympic Games will take place at Venice Beach in Los Angeles, California. The decision marks a move from the previously announced location of Long Beach, CA.
The relocation brings the Olympic swim, bike and run disciplines to one of southern California’s most recognisable coastal destinations.
“We are super excited about the new venue,” said Antonio Arimany, President Elect of World Triathlon.
“Venice Beach offers a dynamic and energetic atmosphere that perfectly complements the spirit of triathlon. We are confident that this iconic location will provide an unforgettable experience for athletes, fans, and the global audience.”
The Olympic triathlon programme in 2028 will feature three medal events: men’s individual, women’s individual, and the mixed relay. The athlete quota remains unchanged from Paris 2024, with 55 men and 55 women set to compete.
The announcement came as LA28 unveiled its most detailed venue plan to date, following approval from the International Olympic Committee Executive Board. The plan includes a number of changes aimed at maximising the use of existing infrastructure and offering spectators and athletes access to high-profile locations throughout Los Angeles County.
Reynold Hoover, Chief Executive Officer of LA28, said “Every venue selected for the 2028 Games will provide athletes and fans the best possible experience.”
Venice Beach will also serve as the start location for the marathon and road cycling events, with full course details for both still to be confirmed.
Elsewhere, Long Beach will host beach volleyball at Alamitos Beach, open water swimming, and coastal rowing – a new Olympic discipline for 2028. Sport climbing and target shooting will also be held in Long Beach, using temporary venues with oceanfront backdrops.
In downtown Los Angeles, gymnastics, trampoline, weightlifting and boxing will take place across the Peacock Theater and the Arena, while Dodger Stadium will stage baseball following its Olympic return.
New Olympic sports will also be showcased. Squash is set to debut on the Universal Studios Lot, while cricket (T20) will be held in Pomona, California.
Equestrian events will return to Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, while archery and rugby sevens will be staged in Carson.
