109th Giro d’Italia set for Bulgaria start, as Vingegaard makes debut

Giro d'Italia riders

The official start list for the 109th edition of the Giro d’Italia has been confirmed, with 184 riders from 23 teams preparing to begin the 21-stage race on May 8, 2026. This year’s Corsa Rosa, which is organised by RCS Sport, features a Grande Partenza in Bulgaria, starting in Nessebar and concluding in Rome, Italy, on May 31, 2026.

The race will see global distribution through an extensive network of broadcasters. In the UK, TNT Sports is the reference platform, while Warner Bros Discovery provides full coverage across Europe via Eurosport, HBO Max, and Discovery+. In the US, fans can watch via HBO Max and TruTV, while SBS provides coverage in Australia.

The leader jerseys for the 2026 edition are designed by Castelli, featuring the Maglia Rosa for the general classification, the Maglia Ciclamino for points, the Maglia Azzurra for the mountains, and the Maglia Bianca for the best young rider.

At this year’s Giro, all eyes are on Denmark’s Jonas Vingegaard as he makes his first appearance at the Giro d’Italia. Following victories in the Tour de France and the Vuelta a España, the Team Visma | Lease a Bike rider is aiming to join the exclusive group of cyclists who have won all three Grand Tours. He is supported by Sepp Kuss, the 2023 Vuelta a España winner.

Vingegaard faces a competitive field of general classification contenders. Red Bull – Bora – Hansgrohe is fielding a strong line-up led by 2022 champion Jai Hindley and Italian prospect Giulio Pellizzari. UAE Team Emirates XRG will be led by Adam Yates, recent winner of O Gran Camiño, alongside Jay Vine and young talent Jan Christen.

Former champion Egan Bernal, who won the race in 2021, returns for his third participation with Netcompany Ineos, supported by Thymen Arensman. Other podium threats include Derek Gee, who finished fourth in the 2025 season, Damiano Caruso, Felix Gall, Ben O’Connor, and Enric Mas.

The sprint field is headlined by Jonathan Milan, who has already secured six wins in the 2026 season. Milan holds a points classification title from each of the three Grand Tours he has completed. His main challengers for the Maglia Ciclamino include Kaden Groves, Dylan Groenewegen, Pascal Ackermann, Arnaud De Lie, and Paul Magnier.

Time trial specialist Filippo Ganna, who has seven Giro stage wins to his name, is the favourite for the individual time trial between Viareggio and Massa. He will face competition from Alec Segaert, Rémi Cavagna, and Magnus Sheffield.
