Destination Chattanooga for 2027 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship

Destination Chattanooga for 2027 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship

The IRONMAN Group has announced that Chattanooga, Tennessee, has been selected as the host destination for the 2027 Precision Fuel & Hydration IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship.

The middle–distance triathlon event is scheduled to take place on August 28-29, 2027. IRONMAN notes that it will bring together approximately 7,000 professional and age–group triathletes who have earned a starting position across more than 120 qualifying rounds internationally.

The selection of Chattanooga forms part of a wider five–year agreement between the event organiser and local authorities to secure the long–term presence of IRONMAN branded events in the region. The partnership also includes the future return of an Experience Oman IRONMAN Pro Series racing event to the city.

Chattanooga has a decade–long history of hosting middle– and long–distance triathlons, having previously hosted the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship in 2017. That edition marked the first time the championship format was split across two days to accommodate separate fields, a structure that has since remained a template for the event.

The event course utilizes the natural geography of the local area, featuring a swim inside the Tennessee River, a rolling bike route heading into northern Georgia, and a spectator–focused run along the city’s riverwalk.

According to IRONMAN, the world championship represents a significant step up from standard calendar events, drawing broader international media coverage and a deeper competitive field. The race also frequently serves as a competitive intersection between short–course Olympic specialists and established long–distance endurance athletes.

Diana Bertsch, Managing Director, IRONMAN North America & World Championship Events, said “Chattanooga has already demonstrated its ability to deliver an exceptional IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship experience. From its stunningly scenic courses to the overwhelming community engagement, we are thrilled to return in 2027 and once again showcase this iconic destination to a global audience. This expanded partnership reflects our shared commitment to long-term success and continued growth, including the return of professional racing.”

The financial impact of the events remains a key driver for the regional economy. In 2025, the combined staging of IRONMAN Chattanooga and IRONMAN 70.3 Chattanooga reportedly generated US$26.8 million in local economic impact.

The organisers project that the 2027 world championship event will deliver more than US$50 million to the local economy. For comparison, the 2025 edition held in Marbella, Spain, reportedly generated the equivalent of US$71 million (€61.8 million) in total economic impact for its host region.

Mark Ezell, Tennessee Department of Tourist Development Commissioner, said “The world’s best athletes deserve a world-class destination, and that’s exactly what Chattanooga delivers with endless outdoor adventure and the exceptional hospitality Tennessee is known for. IRONMAN will bring visitors – and the tax dollars they generate – from around the globe, generate millions in economic impact for local businesses and showcase the experiences that inspire travelers to return to Tennessee again and again.”

The competitive qualifying cycle for the 2027 event will begin next month on July 5, 2026. The opening qualifying slots will be contested across three international events: the IRONMAN 70.3 Jönköping European Championship, IRONMAN 70.3 Les Sables d’Olonne–Vendée, and IRONMAN 70.3 Muskoka triathlons.

In addition to the main world championship races, the event week in August 2027 will feature an onsite expo at the IRONMAN Village, official athlete briefing sessions, local community activations, and IRONKIDS races.
