Ten years after the launch of its first performance gravel bike at the Sea Otter Classic expo, OPEN returned to the event in Monterey, CA, to introduce the WI.DE. 2.0. Positioned as an extreme gravel frame, WI.DE. 2.0 is the successor to the original WI.DE. and is designed for terrain that may typically be considered unrideable on a traditional drop-bar bike.
The Sea Otter Classic, organised by Life Time, served as the backdrop for the release of the WI.DE. 2.0. OPEN, a bicycle company known for its focus on gravel and all-road performance. OPEN notes that while its U.P. range is built for fast gravel, the WI.DE. 2.0 is engineered to maintain rider speed over more technical and extreme surfaces.
The WI.DE. 2.0 features significant increases in tyre clearance, accommodating up to 700x66mm (29×2.6″) tyres. According to the company, moving from 50mm to 66mm nearly doubles the air volume inside the tyre, which can be used to protect rims from obstacles such as rocks and roots, or to lower pressure for increased grip.
Fitting tyres of this size into a compact and agile frame required a redesign of the chainstay structure. While the original U.P. introduced a single dropped chainstay, the WI.DE. 2.0 utilises a double chainstay drop. By designing specifically around modern gravel drivetrains and removing compatibility with older 2x setups, it has maximised the space available for both tyres and chainstays.
The frame is paired with the U-Turn AC/DC+ (Aero Cargo Double Combo) fork. This combines aerodynamic profiling with cargo-carrying capabilities. The fork features patent-pending cargo slots that allow bags to be strapped directly to the fork legs without the need for a cage, though cargo barrels are included for those who prefer to mount water bottles or specific cages.
Storage options have been expanded throughout the frame. The WI.DE. 2.0 includes direct-mount frame bag compatibility and two storage areas located inside the downtube, which are secured with the Fitlock locking mechanism.
Additional mounting points are positioned under the bottom bracket and on the top tube. OPEN indicated that an aero frame bag will be available in autumn/fall 2026.
The WI.DE. 2.0 follows the company’s A.I.R. (agile, integrated, refined) geometry philosophy. OPEN claims the steering geometry maintains sharp handling despite the use of 66mm tyres. The frames are slightly longer and taller than previous versions and are designed to be paired with the OPEN B.A.R. system to adjust rider fit.
As part of the ‘Made in Freedom’ project, the WI.DE. 2.0 frame is manufactured in Portugal. This initiative involves moving production to countries that score highly in democracy rankings, such as The Economist Democracy Index.
The WI.DE. 2.0 enters production this month and is expected to ship towards summer 2026. Orders will open in mid-May 2026.
