POC unveils Amidal helmet for road and gravel riders

POC, the Stockholm-based protection and performance specialist, has introduced a new helmet for road and gravel cyclists called the Amidal. According to the company, the helmet represents a refined approach to development, aimed at riders seeking performance and protection in a new form.

The Amidal has been designed for a variety of environments, from urban settings and city criteriums to long rural rides. A key feature of the new release is the integration of a bespoke rear light developed in partnership with Knog.

Magnus Gustafsson, Hard Goods Director at POC, said “Our objective in creating the Amidal was to develop a helmet from all our extensive safety, ventilation and aerodynamic expertise and encapsulate it in a new form. The Amidal has many standout features, notably its streamlined silhouette, refined rear exhaust ports and bespoke rear Knog light. But what also sets the Amidal apart is the comfort and balance which will support and energise long and short rides alike.”

The construction of the Amidal pairs a polycarbonate outer shell with an optimised EPS liner to balance structural rigidity and weight. Its design includes reinforced exhaust ports to manage airflow and ventilation.

The bike brand claims to have validated the aerodynamic and cooling performance through computational fluid dynamics (CFD) testing at various speeds. Following POC’s established approach to cooling, air is captured by front vents and directed through linear internal channels, intended to support airflow during both long climbs and race-pace efforts.

For fit and comfort, the helmet utilizes a 360-degree fit system to distribute retention evenly and remove pressure points. The chin straps are adjustable in multiple directions to provide a personalised fit. Additionally, the helmet includes an ‘eye garage’ for storing sunglasses during climbs or changing light conditions.

Safety features include Mips Air Node technology, which is the latest generation of the Mips system. This allows the helmet to move independently of the head during an oblique impact to enhance rotational impact protection.

The Amidal also includes a dedicated mount for a bespoke Knog rear light. Colin Brown, Brand and Marketing Director at Knog, said “POC has gained a reputation for innovation and advanced product development and design, as such it was a very natural fit for us to join forces on this project. Our objective in working together was to create a seamless and highly usable light that would be a clear part of the helmet’s product development and design, very intuitive to use and add to each rider’s safety in all conditions, whether they are riding during the dark months in Sweden or on the busier urban roads in Australia.”

The helmet weighs 310g for a size medium (EN 1078 standard) and 350g for a size medium (CPSC standard). It is priced at US$270 / £220 / €240.

The companion POC x Knog Helmet Light uses Chip On Board (COB) technology to produce 30 lumens. It features four modes, including an eco mode with a runtime of up to 26 hours. The light is waterproof, USB-A rechargeable, and is sold separately for US$45 / £40 / €40.

Regarding safety standards, POC noted that the Amidal has been tested against updated EN 1078 rotational impact thresholds (≤ 35 rad/s per location, ≤ 30 rad/s average) in anticipation of these becoming mandatory in the future.

The seasonal collection is available at the company’s website and via selected retailers.
