VAN RYSEL has unveiled its FTP^2 concept bike, which is described as its most complex R&D undertaking to date.
The FTP^2 – which stands for Functional Threshold Power squared – is designed to showcase in-house innovation and explore the boundaries of integrated performance. It is positioned as a radical concept bike not intended for commercial sale.
The concept bike’s primary objective is to simulate the sensation of professional-level speeds for amateur riders by… ‘effectively doubling their power output through an integrated motor system.’
The bike features a bespoke MAHLE e-bike motor specifically developed for the product’s development. Unlike standard e-bikes, VAN RYSEL points out that the FTP^2 breaks free from conventional speed limits to test aerodynamic efficiency and rider safety at extreme speeds.
Wim Van Hoecke, Project Manager at FTP^2 and E-Bike Product Manager at VAN RYSEL, said “With Project FTP^2, we deliberately stepped outside traditional cycling industry frameworks.
“For the first time, we have manufactured a unique carbon frame capable of being ridden in the real world. Doubling the rider’s FTP, removing speed limits, and developing our own electronics, cockpit and textiles allowed us to explore extreme performance in a controlled and thoughtful way.”
Developed in collaboration with aerodynamic specialists Swiss Side, the project is conceived as a fully integrated ecosystem that includes a cockpit, helmet, clothing, and footwear.
Key technical innovations include:
- A Formula 1 inspired cockpit that centralises control on the handlebars to improve safety at high speeds.
- A wireless shoe system that eliminates traditional fasteners and clip pedals. The shoe-to-bike interaction is controlled via the cockpit, removing mechanical elements to improve aerodynamics.
- A hybrid helmet featuring an EU-certified base with a detachable carbon aerodynamic shell.
- Technical textiles that incorporate motorcycle-standard protective pads while maintaining aerodynamic efficiency.
Based in Lille, France, VAN RYSEL was founded in 2019 and serves as the premium cycling brand for Decathlon. It is currently the technical partner for the DECATHLON–AG2R LA MONDIALE WorldTour team (formerly DECATHLON–CMA CGM), supplying the squad with RCR and XCR series bikes and equipment.
The FTP^2 concept bike will remain a prototype used to inform future product development across the brand’s commercial ranges.
