Kyrsten Sinema, representing Arizona’s 9th district in the United States Congress since 2012, is running for a new title – to become an Ironman finisher on Sunday 17 November. Rep Sinema will become the first active member of the US Congress to compete in the 140.6 mile Ironman Arizona long course race, which includes the full IM distance 2.4 mile open water swim, 112 mile bike ride and a 26.2 mile run, all completed in under 17 hours.
“Competing in Ironman Arizona, in the heart of Congressional District 9, is one of the most exciting challenges I’ve ever faced.,” said Sinema. “The Ironman competition represents what I admire most about the American spirit – hard work, determination and a commitment to overcoming challenges.”
She continued, “Raising funds for the Desert States Charitable Foundation has made this year’s race even more meaningful. I’m proud to race for a local charity that helps so many kids and families in the metro Phoenix community.”
The Desert States Charitable Foundation provides scholarships for higher learning and assists underprivileged children in the community. The foundation also raises money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, which funds medical research to find cures for blood cancers and provides assistance to families affected by leukaemia, lymphoma, non-Hodgkin’s disease and melanoma.
Ironman Arizona 2013 became one of the fastest-selling events on the global IM calendar this time last year. When general registration opened in November 2012, the event filled in just 40 seconds. The race is scheduled for Sunday 17 November 2013, and offers 50 age group qualifying slots to the 2014 Ironman World Championship (which takes place on 11 October 2014, in Kailua-Kona, Hawai’i).
The rapid filling of Ironman Arizona 2013 follows a similar trend in the preceding year – when Ironman Arizona 2012 sold out in less than 10 minutes.
