Human Race has teamed up with St Lucian Olympic swimmer Jamie Peterkin who is a supporter of the inaugural St Lucia Triathlon. Jamie and his father Peter are passionate about getting children swimming and taking part in triathlon on the island of St Lucia where shockingly 85% of the island’s population cannot swim.
This week Human Race founder, and Event Director of the St Lucia Triathlon, John Lunt went along to the International School on the island to invite the children down to take part in the various swims and triathlon events taking place on the weekend of 23-24 November.
This week, athletes taking part in the St Lucia triathlon took part in an early morning Aquathlon. Following this, participants got further tricks of the trade in an open water swimming skills class with Jamie Peterkin.
On Saturday athletes will compete over three separate competitive distances. The course includes a swim in the beautiful clear waters of Rodney Bay, a tough hilly volcanic bike ride and finally, a flat run to Pigeon Island and back. Event distances include:
- The Dagger: 200m swim, 6.6K bike, 2.5K run
- The Pistol: 750m swim, 13.2K bike, 5K run
- The Cutlass: 1500m swim, 26.4K bike, 10K run
For the Children’s events there will be a 100m swim, an 800m bike and an 800m run as their challenge.
The St Lucia Triathlon is an annual event. Following the event, the organising team will be donating all the event equipment to the St Lucia Triathlon Association so they can organise their own events and encourage more Saint Lucian’s to take part in multisport.
St Lucia’s leading telecommunications company, Digicel is on board as the title sponsor of Tri St Lucia, which is the largest and most diverse mass participation sporting event to be hosted on the Caribbean island. IOC member and St Lucian, Richard Peterkin, will also present awards to all the winners at the event’s prize giving ceremony.
