Triathlon England has announced the inaugural National Schools Championships, to take place on 10 July 2011 in Nuneaton, Warwickshire.
This new event is part of a wider Triathlon England Children’s and Young People Programme that aims to introduce more budding triathletes into the already fast growing, modern and dynamic Olympic sport of triathlon.
The event will consist of teams of four (two boys and two girls) from schools within each of the 48 English counties and the five ‘Proactives’ in London, with participants from school years seven to 11 (11 to 16 year olds). The event will be an aquathlon, which provides an accessible first step onto the triathlon ladder.
Martin Harris, President of Triathlon England said “The National Schools Championships is a central aspect of Triathlon England’s Children and Young People Programme, and will ensure triathlon is introduced to school children around the country. It will also be the first step in developing a sustainable infrastructure within the school sports network that can inspire the triathlon stars of tomorrow.”
British Triathlon Chief Executive, Zara Hyde Peters OBE is also delighted about the new Championships: “The first National Schools Championships is an exciting new programme from Triathlon England that takes our modern and dynamic sport to a wider audience and provides a competition format that will be both fun and competitive.”
