Following on from the ‘LET GO NOW’ book about Sebastian Kienle’s last year as a pro triathlete, a new documentary ‘UNTIL THE END (Bis zum Schluss) – From Underdog to World Champion’ has been released.
The almost 80-minute documentary provides an insight into the world of a professional athlete who is visibly finding it difficult to let go of his beloved sport of triathlon. Filmmaker and producer René Domke followed the three-time world champion up close for 12 months.
The sport of triathlon has defined, driven and fulfilled Kienle’s life for 30 years. The 39-year-old from Mühlacker, Germany, won the 2014 IRONMAN World Championship, as well as the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship in 2012 and 2013.
The film shows the retiring pro athlete in his last 12 months competing at the top level, up close with some previously unreleased material. Sebastian Kienle himself as well as old companions look back on ‘Sebi’s’ career – on his beginnings, what made him who he was and what he still is.
According to the documentary team… ‘It becomes clear what the ‘Kienle DNA’ is that has made him so successful. At the same time, it also shows the person behind it, who is doubtful, afraid and often lonely. A story about the path from professional sport to a new second life after a career that has so many similarities to all of us. We all find ourselves in this documentary. That’s exactly why it’s gripping, because it shows how connected we all are.’
Written and directed by René Domke the film is currently available for purchase (US$8.99) via Vimeo.
