Shimano SPD-SLR integrated road pedal system aims to optimise power transfer

Cycling component manufacturer Shimano has launched SPD-SLR, which is billed as a next-generation integrated system comprising footwear, pedals, and cleats… designed to bring riders closer to the pedal axle and optimise power transfer.

The new system introduces a major update to the company’s road ecosystem, focusing on a lower stack height, faster engagement, reduced overall weight, and expanded fitting adjustments.

Rather than treating shoe, cleat, and pedal as separate components, Shimano engineered the SPD-SLR interface as a single unit to eliminate play and refine energy transmission.

System engineering and pedal updates
At the core of the SPD-SLR system is a redesigned cleat and pedal interface that reduces overall stack height by 2.3mm compared to the previous SPD-SL platform. This brings the rider’s foot closer to the pedal axle to improve pedalling stability and control during sprints and climbs.

Engagement has also been updated with a wider target catch zone and a narrower 10.5° engagement angle, down from 15.5° on SPD-SL, allowing for faster clipping in. The newly designed cleats are also up to 22% lighter while featuring high-contrast alignment markings to simplify setup.

The SPD-SLR system debuts across two new pedal platforms:

  • DURA-ACE PD-R9300: Designed for top-level road racing, the flagship pedal features an injection-moulded carbon-composite body, an extra-wide platform, and an integrated stainless steel contact plate. Updated internal axle geometry and bearing surfaces reduce rotational resistance by a reported 47% compared to the PD-R8200, while wider bearing placement provides an 11% increase in platform stiffness.
  • ULTEGRA PD-R8200: Built with a lightweight carbon body and stainless steel contact plate, the Ultegra model incorporates the same low stack height, wide contact area, and fast engagement characteristics for race-inspired training and competition.

Footwear integration
Shimano has updated its performance road shoe range to integrate directly with the new SPD-SLR platform:

  • S-PHYRE SH-RC910: The top-tier shoe features a carbon-fibre heel cup with anti-twist stabilisation, a hollow carbon midsole, and Shimano Dynalast 2.0 that aims to reduce foot fatigue over long distances. The upper incorporates an updated surround-wrapping design and new ventilation perforations.
  • SH-RC810: Offering trickle-down performance from the S-PHYRE range, the SH-RC810 utilises dual BOA Li2 dials, an external heel equaliser, and a hollow-channel carbon midsole for enhanced drainage and breathability.

Cleat options and backward compatibility
The system includes four distinct cleat options tailored to different rider biomechanics:

  • CL-SL100 (Red): Fixed position with 0° float for direct power transfer.
  • CL-SL110 (Yellow): Features 3° of rotational float for reduced joint stress.
  • CL-SL120 (Blue): Delivers 1° of float for a balance between stability and movement.
  • CL-SL130 (Grey): A transition option designed for non-Shimano three-bolt road shoes. It offers expanded adjustment range on fixed-mount outsoles, though it does not provide the reduced stack height or weight savings of the core SPD-SLR system.

SPD-SLR cleats are compatible with existing Shimano SPD-SL shoes, but achieve their full low-stack benefits when paired with new SPD-SLR footwear. SPD-SLR cleats are designed exclusively for SPD-SLR pedals and are not backward compatible with legacy SPD-SL pedals.
