‘The great indoors’ for new cycling apparel brand idō

idō is a new independent cycling brand – focusing on indoor training and racing. The company notes that it has ‘a singular vision to create the world’s best garments for the demanding indoor environment.’

The inaugural capsule collection, consisting of jersey and bib-shorts in specific men’s and women’s cuts, was released this week on Monday 2 November 2020.

A release from the brand gave an explanation for its indoor cycling specific apparel…

‘Many of us have plenty of old cycling gear, cheap options or an ill-fitting t-shirt that we can use on the indoor trainer. Why not just wear that? When creating idō, we thought deeply about this – about the problem we are solving and the need we are fulfilling.

‘Cycling indoors is a completely different experience to outdoors and so the garments you wear should be suited to that environment. Whether your needs centre around performance or comfort, having the appropriate kit will always be the answer. To ride harder, faster, longer or simply without irritation is our ultimate goal.

‘We have created a highly technical collection that is light and breathable, that helps you perform and is supremely comfortable with no concession to style.’

idō garments aim to improve riders’ indoor cycling experience in three core areas:

Heat management
Fabric weaves are designed to promote optimum cooling, constructed with a fine gauge weave to be breathable and fast drying. The ultra high-density microfibre keeps the body cool and dry without sticking to the skin.

Rider comfort
A session on the indoor trainer is very different to a ride out on the road. With little variation in ride position and more sustained periods of continual pedalling pressure points are heightened and the body put under different stresses. The new brand has analysed the specific challenges that arise from cycling indoors, especially for prolonged periods, to create garment patterns and fabrics that provide the most comfortable ride possible.

Free movement
Garments are designed to support the natural movement of the body. Its bib-shorts feature gradual compression which optimises muscle support, reduces fatigue and promotes rapid recovery from efforts. The close fitting cut of all products is designed with performance in mind, developed to provide maximum lightness and adaptability.

idō is the result of two years of product and brand development by Jonathan Davies and MJ Jackson of cycling focused branding agency Conductor and Tom Austen of Pelotan, the sun protection brand for athletes.
