When confronted with the issue of excess fabrics from previous production runs of its jerseys, Australian cycling apparel brand MAAP looked at a number of options.
The company noted that it could contribute to the growing number of textiles that end up in landfill each year: an average of 31 kilos of textiles per person annually, at a national rate (Australia) of 15 tonnes of textile waste every ten minutes.
Instead, MAAP notes that it chose to address this problem with… ‘a creative solve that not only benefits the environment, but empowers cyclists to be part of the solution.’
According to the 2020 Preferred Fibre and Materials Market Report, “global fibre production has doubled in the last 20 years, reaching an all-time high of 111 million metric tons in 2019 and pre-COVID-19 results indicated potential growth to 146 million metric tons by 2030.
In addition, Reverse Resources concluded from its 2017 study that 47% of all fibre entering the fashion value chain becomes waste throughout the myriad of different stages of production from fibre, yarn, fabric up to a garment.
Drawing inspiration from 1980s shoe salespeople who would carry around a colourful amalgamation of all available colours rolled into one shoe, the MAAP OffCuts Program takes excess fabrics from previous production runs, and repurposes them.
The company has launched this program with a new multi-colourway in its most popular style, the Evade Pro Base Jersey.

The OffCuts Program marks the beginning of a long running product initiative in an effort to reduce the amount of excess fabrics ending up in landfill; as part of MAAP’s ongoing commitment to its sustainability practices.
Going forwards, from season to season, more uniquely different styles will be developed as part of the OffCuts Program, all available in ‘extremely limited quantities’.
