British Cycling Foundation launched with mass day of volunteering

British Cycling has launched the British Cycling Foundation with a major day of volunteering activity involving more than 270 riders, coaches and staff. The initiative is described as the largest day of social impact delivery ever undertaken by a UK national governing body.

The new charitable foundation will support programmes that use cycling to address inequalities, promote inclusion, and improve physical and mental health. It will be led by three-time Olympic champion Ed Clancy OBE, who has been appointed Managing Director.

The volunteering effort – equating to over 1,200 hours across 59 projects – saw Olympic champions Sophie Capewell and Emma Finucane deliver to Manchester foodbanks by cargo-bike with Chorlton Bike Deliveries. Meanwhile, Sir Jason Kenny and Jody Cundy supported the Manchester Bike Kitchen with bike recycling and repairs.

Paralympic athletes Callum Russell and Archie Atkinson also joined Experience Community, a not-for-profit group supporting disabled people to access the outdoors. They took part in a 28-mile gravel ride to promote inclusive cycling.

Jo Howson from British Cycling said “As such a large governing body, covering all the different ways cycling can impact lives – sport, health, social – it’s super important that we get out there and walk the walk ourselves.”

The foundation’s launch aligns with British Cycling’s four-year strategy, announced in March 2025, which puts social impact at its core.

Staff volunteered at locations such as the Philips Park Pump Track, Chorlton Bike Deliveries and local schools, helping with track repairs, deliveries and community engagement.

Tracy Power, Social Impact Director at British Cycling, stated that the day “shows a strong commitment to our strategy and tackling inequalities across the country, starting at home.”

Ed Clancy added “We have seen what we have achieved in one day – with people’s support we can have a significant impact to bring the joy of cycling to all.”

The foundation’s work will be supported by UK Sport, National Lottery and Sport England, with a focus on creating positive outcomes for communities across the UK.
