Strava has announced the acquisition of key assets from cycling training app The Breakaway, as part of a continued push to expand its subscription offering.
Backed by tech start-up accelerator & venture capital firm, Y Combinator, The Breakaway delivers personalised cycling training plans, performance analysis and progress tracking tools.
According to Strava, cyclists using The Breakaway upload twice as many activities to the platform compared to other users.
The latest move follows Strava’s recent acquisition of Runna, the UK-based running training app. According to Strava, the acquisition of The Breakaway represents another step in strengthening its ecosystem for endurance athletes.
Michael Martin, CEO at Strava, stated that the acquisition supports the platform’s long-standing connection to cycling.
“When Strava was founded more than 16 years ago, it was created initially for cyclists – these users remain important members of our global community, and we are excited to enhance their experience through this acquisition.
“Jordan Kobert, Kyle Yugawa and [The Breakaway] team have built a brilliant app for cyclists who want to improve and achieve their cycling targets, making it a perfect fit for the Strava subscription.”
Strava added that the acquisition also reinforces its commitment to innovation and investment in its developer community, including its open API, which allows third-party developers to integrate new features and experiences for users.
