Strava has launched its new ‘For a Cause’ activity tag, enabling its community of over 180 million users to dedicate their movement to raise awareness and funds for causes they care about.
To launch the feature, Strava has teamed up with GoFundMe, which it describes as the ‘international leader in online fundraising’. The partnership will allow Strava users to dedicate any workout to an individual fundraiser or a non-profit listed on GoFundMe.
The new feature introduces a suite of tools that integrate charitable and non-profit support directly into the Strava experience. Users can start a fundraiser on GoFundMe and then connect their Strava account to automatically log miles completed, which is then shown to donors.
Tim Cadogan, Chief Executive Officer of GoFundMe, said “At GoFundMe, we’re focused on giving people easy and meaningful ways to support the people and causes they care about.
“Through our collaboration with Strava, we’re giving a international community of active people a simple way to help one another, raise awareness, and support causes that move them – while enabling more giving to non-profits that are driving positive change in the world.”
To kick off the partnership this month, Strava and GoFundMe began spotlighting non-profit organisations such as the American Cancer Society, Movember, Achilles International, Feeding America, and The National MS Society.
Strava users can log any of the app’s 50 activity choices and add the ‘For A Cause’ tag before posting. They can then share details about their activity and a link to their GoFundMe fundraiser in the activity description.
The steps for users are:
- Start a fundraiser on GoFundMe
- Connect the Strava account to the fundraiser
- Log any activity on Strava
- Add the ‘For A Cause’ tag to the activity
- Describe the activity and drop in the link to the fundraiser in the activity description
- Share and track progress
