The Los Angeles 2028 (LA28) Olympic Games has unveiled its competition schedule, confirming that the women’s individual triathlon will award the first medal of the Games.
The event, which will take place in the Venice Beach Zone in Los Angeles, CA, will be held on Day 1, Saturday, July 15, 2028, starting at 07:30 PDT (Pacific Daylight Time).
The Men’s Individual Triathlon will follow on Day 2, Sunday, July 16, 2028, also beginning at 07:30 PDT. The Mixed Relay will close the triathlon programme on Thursday, July 20, 2028, with a start time of 08:00 PDT.
The races will follow the Olympic distance format – 1.5km swim, 40km bike, and 10km run – all set against the coastal backdrop of Venice Beach.
This will mark the first time since the Sydney 2000 Games that a triathlon event will be the first medal awarded.
Reynold Hoover, Chief Executive Officer of LA28, said “With Olympic ticket registration opening in January of 2026, now is the time to start planning what events you want to attend, which sports are coming to your neighbourhood and the moments of history you don’t want to miss. Athletes and fans from around the world now have what they need to plan an unforgettable Olympic experience.”

Day 15 is scheduled as ‘Super Saturday’, featuring 26 finals sessions across 23 sports, including the Athletics (Marathon) final.
