Triathlon to award first medal of LA28 Olympic Games

In just three years, the Olympic Games will return to Los Angeles for the third time in history. To celebrate the ‘Road to 2028’, the LA28 organisers have unveiled the first look at the Olympic competition schedule.

The 2028 Olympic Opening Ceremony is set for Friday, July 14, 2028. And on the very first day of competition, triathlon will award LA28’s first Olympic medal in the surroundings of Venice Beach along Los Angeles’ coastline.

Set in Venice Beach, the women’s individual triathlon will be held on Saturday, July 15, and the men’s individual triathlon is scheduled for Sunday, July 16. The Mixed Relay will be held on Thursday, July 20.

World Triathlon President, Antonio Arimany, said “We are incredibly excited not only to be part of the LA28 Olympic Games, but especially to have the honour of awarding the very first medal.

“We know that the eyes of the world will be on the best triathletes of this generation as they compete for Olympic glory.

“World Triathlon will work closely with LA28 to provide an exciting and thrilling competition that will captivate millions of viewers worldwide and draw hundreds of thousands of passionate spectators to the streets of Venice Beach. The triathlon competition, the individual events and the Mixed Relay, were iconic in Paris 2024, and we are committed that LA28 will be even better. We are looking forward to three unforgettable days of competition in Venice Beach.”

As part of the Road to 2028, the competition schedule highlights an ambitious lineup of sports, developed in close collaboration with Games delivery partners including Olympic Broadcasting Services (OBS), international federations (IFs), and with the approval of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Executive Board.

‘This schedule showcases the most extensive array of sporting events in Olympic history. As planning advances, the schedule will continue to evolve, with a more detailed list of medal events and gender participation to be released later this year.’

Venice Beach will see an early start to the competitions, with the individual triathlon races beginning at 07:30 local time, and the Mixed Relay starting at 08:00. Although these times are currently scheduled as such, the detailed competition times are subject to slight adjustments in the coming months as plans are finalised.
