Canyon's next-generation Speedmax triathlon bike built around AeroID concept

German bicycle manufacturer Canyon has unveiled the latest generation of its Speedmax triathlon bike. Designed to bring pro-level performance and customisation directly to consumers, the new Speedmax CFR and CF SLX models feature updated aerodynamics, revised frame geometry, and a modular cockpit and storage system.

The Speedmax has established a strong presence in the sport of triathlon, having been ridden to eight IRONMAN World Championship titles alongside numerous victories on the T100 triathlon tour. The model is also a popular choice among age-group competitors, regularly securing the highest bike counts at major international events such as DATEV Challenge Roth and the IRONMAN World Championship.

For this latest iteration, the company’s research and development team shifted its focus from designing bespoke, one-off prototype parts for elite professional athletes – such as Laura Phillip, Sam Laidlow, Kat Matthews, and Patrick Lange – to creating a fully adjustable, production-ready system.

This setup is built around a new concept called AeroID. Recognising that more than 70% of overall aerodynamic drag is caused by the rider’s body rather than the bicycle itself, the system is designed to help athletes of all levels find and sustain their most aerodynamic position. The technology is divided into four core design pillars: AeroShield, AeroFuel, AeroFit, and AeroBase.

AeroShield introduces a highly adjustable, closed-structure cockpit designed to guide airflow around the athlete while increasing stability and control. For competitors seeking maximum weight and drag reductions, the company has introduced the AeroShield Pro upgrade. This lightweight monocoque system, refined through two separate IRONMAN World Championship victories, is 300g lighter than the standard cockpit and saves a claimed 3 watts at 45km/h.

AeroFuel integrates competition-legal hydration and nutrition storage directly into the frame’s silhouette. The system offers an overall liquid capacity of up to 3,500ml, which is split between an internal frame bladder and additional modular storage. This includes the AeroModule, which sits between the rider’s forearms to fill the aerodynamic void and can save up to 7 watts at 45km/h, and the Splitter Plate Pro seatpost system, which positions bottles horizontally behind the rider’s saddle to reduce wind turbulence.

AeroFit offers simplified position adjustments to help riders dial in their bike fit. It features a wide range of arm pad adjustments, stepless millimeter-precise tuning for cockpit stack, reach, and angle, and uses standardised TX25 adjustment screws to allow quick changes.

AeroBase represents the physical frame. This carbon frameset features updated, progressive geometry to improve handling stability at high speeds. Canyon has also simplified its frame sizing. The previous extra-small option, which utilised smaller 650b wheels, has been retired.

The Speedmax frame size range now exclusively runs on 700c wheels and begins at size small. This features a reduced standover height to accommodate riders with a minimum seat height of 630mm, ensuring smaller athletes can access the same wheel and frame performance.

The top-tier Speedmax CFR frameset utilizes an advanced carbon fibre layup that shaves 250g from the previous generation, resulting in a weight saving of up to 500g on fully built, race-ready bikes. The frame also retains a practical tool pouch integrated above the bottom bracket.

The new range includes two elite-level CFR models and three CF SLX models, available with either Shimano Di2 or SRAM AXS electronic groupsets. All models are equipped with power meters, DT Swiss ARC wheels, Continental Aero 111 tyres, and Fizik Transiro saddles.

Pricing for the new Speedmax models ranges from €6,499 to €11,000, while the entry-level Speedmax CF 7 Di2 remains in the line-up at €4,999.
