The Carlsbad 5000, billed as the ‘World’s Fastest 5K’, will mark its 40th anniversary on Sunday, April 12, 2026. The event is expected to bring more than 8,000 runners and walkers to the oceanfront course in Carlsbad, CA.
Since its inaugural race in 1986, the event has produced 16 world records and eight US records. Over the past four decades, more than 195,000 participants from 50 US states and 21 countries have taken part in the coastal race.
John Smith, Owner of event organiser Groundwork Endurance, said “The Carlsbad 5000 is the premier 5K road race in the world and has been a North County tradition for 40 years.
“The running is exceptional, but the local endurance community is what makes Carlsbad special. From live music and the beer garden to the Health and Fitness Expo and elite invitational races, downtown Carlsbad becomes the place to be on race weekend.”
The 2026 edition will feature several tributes to the event’s history, including the recognition of six legacy runners who have participated in every race since 1986. A plane is also scheduled to fly a celebratory banner over the Pacific Ocean during the proceedings.
American distance running legends Meb Keflezighi and Deena Kastor will serve as official ambassadors for the weekend. Kastor holds a significant place in the event’s history, having set a women’s world record of 14:53 on the Carlsbad course in 2002.
Deena Kastor said “The Carlsbad 5000 has always been one of the most special races in the country because it brings together every level of runner. You have Olympians, professional athletes, longtime participants and first–time runners sharing the same streets and celebrating the sport together.”
The race day schedule begins at 07:00 on April 12 with the Masters Women division, the first of nine scheduled races. The elite men’s race is set for 12:30, followed by the elite women at 12:35.
A total prize purse of US$25,000 is available across the Open and Masters divisions, with US$5,000 awarded to the top male and female professional finishers. An additional US$5,000 bonus is on offer for any athlete who breaks the American record. Winners will receive custom handmade surfboard trophies.
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad is the official charity partner for 2026 and will receive a US$5,000 donation. Additionally, the non-profit Ainsley’s Angels of America will bring 40 push teams to the event to promote accessibility for athletes of all abilities.
Brooks Running returns as the official footwear sponsor, continuing its long-term partnership with the race. Post-race celebrations will include live music and the Pizza Port Beer Garden in Carlsbad Village.
