The International Trail Running Association (ITRA) has published the athlete eligibility framework and entry timeline for the 2026 Asia Pacific Trail Running Championships (APTRC). The event is scheduled to take place on November 24–28, 2026 in Wuyishan, Fujian Province, China.
ITRA is a non-profit organisation and notes that it is dedicated to the development and ethical governance of trail running on an international scale. This latest announcement provides athletes and recognised bodies across the Asia Pacific region with early visibility on the selection process and key milestones leading up to the second edition of the championships.
The APTRC 2026 programme will include three official championship races: Long Trail, Short Trail, and U23 Trail. These categories aim to bring together leading athletes from across the region to compete for individual honours and national team results.
Eligibility for the event will be determined through selection processes based on the ITRA Performance Index (PI). Athletes will be ranked within their country or region using the official ITRA database.
To be considered eligible, athletes must be ranked within their country or region on the official ranking reference date. For the Long Trail and Short Trail categories, it is the top 30 athletes per gender based on the General Performance Index. For the U23 Trail, it is the top 20 athletes per gender based on the U23, U20, or U18 Performance Index.
The official ranking reference date is confirmed as May 31, 2026 at 23:59 UTC. Performance updates recorded after this date will not be considered for eligibility purposes.
Although registration is not yet open, ITRA has established specific entry periods to guide preparation. The team entry period for recognised bodies will run from June 1 – August 15, 2026. This is the primary pathway for participation in the event.
Individual entry opportunities may be available from August 16 – August 31, 2026, subject to remaining capacity and Performance Index rankings. Letters of acceptance are expected to be issued no later than September 15, 2026.
Wildcard entries may also be requested by recognised bodies for athletes who demonstrate strong recent performances outside the standard eligibility rules.
The championships will be held alongside a public trail running event, allowing participants to experience the landscapes of Wuyishan. The Long Trail will cover approximately 80km, the Short Trail approximately 40km, and the U23 Trail approximately 15km.
With the framework now published, ITRA notes that national bodies can begin reviewing athlete rankings and preparing for the selection cycle. Athletes are encouraged to monitor their Performance Index standings and maintain contact with their respective organisations.
Further operational details, including specific entry procedures and event logistics, will be released by the organisers in the lead-up to the championships in late 2026.
