Defending champion and world record holder Sabastian Sawe has withdrawn from the BMW BERLIN-MARATHON on September 27, 2026, due to an injury.
Organised by SCC Events, the race will still feature a strong elite field, particularly in the women’s race.
Sawe said “It is with a heavy heart that I must inform you I am forced to withdraw from the BMW BERLIN-MARATHON due to an injury. I had been looking forward to achieving something special on the streets of Berlin and crossing the finish line at the Brandenburg Gate. It was also my wish to give something back to the race and its organizers, who have supported me so much.
“I want to thank everyone who continues to support me and I wish all the runners taking part a great race. I hope they can enjoy the moment, trust in the work they’ve done and be proud of what they achieve in Berlin. I look forward to seeing you again soon at the starting line in Berlin.”
Mark Milde, Race Director at SCC Events, said “We would have very much liked to see Sabastian Sawe back in Berlin. All the more, we regret that he will not be able to compete this year. We wish him all the best for his recovery and hope to welcome him back to the BMW BERLIN-MARATHON soon.”
The women’s elite field includes two-time winner Tigst Assefa, who returns to the course where she set a world record in 2023. Assefa aims to break the marathon world record once again. German runner Esther Pfeiffer of Düsseldorf Athletics is also aiming to challenge the German marathon record.
