San Francisco Marathon full distance sells out for 2026

Race organisers have announced that the full marathon distance for the San Francisco Marathon in July 2026 has officially sold out. This marks the second consecutive year that the 26.2 mile race has reached maximum capacity ahead of schedule.

While the flagship distance is now closed to new entrants, the organisers have opened a waitlist for the 2027 event. The 2027 race will be a significant milestone for the organisation, marking the 50th anniversary of the San Francisco Marathon.

The San Francisco Marathon takes runners through iconic locations such as the Embarcadero, the Golden Gate Bridge, and the Haight-Ashbury district. It is owned and operated by Jumping Fences.

Lauri Abrahamsen, Race Director for the San Francisco Marathon, said “We are absolutely thrilled to see this level of passion and commitment from the running community. The fact that we’ve sold out so early proves that this race remains a vital, pumping part of San Francisco’s heartbeat. It’s more than just a race; it’s a celebration of our city’s resilience and beauty.”

Although the full marathon has reached capacity, limited spots remain for other distances during the race weekend in San Francisco, CA. These include the China Airlines Bridge Half Marathon and the City Scenic Second Half Marathon.

Availability also remains for the 10km and 5km distances, which feature courses along the Embarcadero. For endurance athletes seeking a greater challenge, the Ultra Marathon – a 52.4 mile double-marathon – is still open for registration.

Priority access for the 50th anniversary event in 2027 will be given to those on the newly opened waitlist as the organisation prepares for its historic half-century celebration.
