As part of his long term alliance with the Challenge Family, Chris ‘Macca’ McCormack has confirmed that he will race at the Half Challenge Barcelona in 2013.
In October, McCormack announced ‘a ten-year partnership with the new defining force in triathlon, the Challenge Family.’ The partnership sees McCormack acting both as an ambassador for the long distance triathlon race series and becoming an integral part of the Challenge Family’s development as it ‘enters its most significant growth phase in the history of the organisation.’
Following an award by the European Triathlon Union (ETU), the ETU European Half Distance Championships will also take place at the Half Challenge Barcelona-Maresme, which will be held on 19 May 2013.
(Back in July, the President of the ETU, Renato Bertrandi, officially announced that the next ETU Long Distance Triathlon will take place at Challenge Vichy on 18 August 2013. Meanwhile, the ETU European Half Distance Championships were awarded to the Half Challenge Barcelona-Maresme.)
MacCormack said, “I am delighted with the idea of competing next May in Barcelona. Having lived a couple of seasons with my wife in Girona and spent many weekends off from training in Barcelona, this city and its region have become my favourite place in Spain. I have spent many hours of training here for the past year and also formed, in part, a base to achieve victory last July at the ITU Long Distance Triathlon World Championships in Vitoria-Gasteiz.”
He added, “Half Challenge Barcelona will certainly be a key competition this season and I’m really excited to compete in this beautiful region in a European Championship.”
