The Welsh Government has announced a three-year funding commitment to RideCymru, the multi-day road cycling event organised by Threshold Sports.
The partnership forms part of a strategy to establish Wales as a world-class destination for cycling tourism and endurance events leading up to the Tour de France Grand Départ in 2027.
The undisclosed investment will support the long-term expansion of RideCymru while aiming to attract international visitors, increase cycling participation, and deliver economic benefits to regional businesses and local communities across Wales.
Road cycling tourism currently generates over £70 million in overnight visitor expenditure for the Welsh economy annually, accounting for more than 200,000 overnight road cycling trips each year, according to data from the Great Britain Tourism Survey.
The Welsh Government and Threshold Sports plan to build on this baseline, strengthening the nation’s position as a premier European cycling destination while establishing a legacy that extends beyond the 2027 Tour de France Grand Départ.
As global attention focuses on Wales ahead of hosting the Grand Départ, RideCymru will serve as a platform to highlight the country’s terrain, infrastructure, and culture to UK and international audiences.
The 2026 edition of RideCymru takes place over three days this month, with participants tackling a fully supported 250-mile (402km) route across mountain passes, climbs, and market towns.
The organiser notes strong initial registration figures, with only a limited number of entries remaining for this year’s event, which takes place on September 11-13, 2026.
Heledd Fychan, Cabinet Minister for Sports at the Welsh Government, said “We’re pleased to support RideCymru through this new partnership as Wales continues to strengthen its reputation as one of the world’s great cycling destinations.
“As we look ahead to hosting the Tour de France Grand Départ in 2027, RideCymru will play an important role in encouraging more people to discover Wales by bike, while delivering lasting benefits for local communities, tourism, and the wider economy. This investment reflects our shared ambition to inspire people of all abilities to get active, experience our incredible landscapes and create a lasting legacy for years to come.”
Nick Tuppen, CEO at Threshold Sports, said “RideCymru was created to showcase everything that makes cycling in Wales so special. While riders will undoubtedly come for the challenge, they’ll leave having experienced the incredible roads, welcoming communities and breathtaking scenery that make Wales one of Europe’s finest places to ride.
“We’re incredibly proud to be working alongside the Welsh Government through this long-term partnership. Together, we have an exciting opportunity to grow cycling tourism, inspire more people to discover Wales and ensure the momentum generated by the Tour de France Grand Départ creates lasting benefits for communities and businesses across the country.”
The multi-year agreement aligns with broader efforts to leverage major endurance sporting events as catalysts for long-term economic growth, sports participation, and sustainable regional tourism.
Founded in 2008, event organiser Threshold Sports delivers endurance cycling, trekking, and running events, including the BHF London to Brighton and Race to the Stones. In 2025, over 60,000 participants competed across 50 Threshold Sports events, raising more than £16 million for non-profit charitable causes. Threshold Sports operates as part of international sports marketing group Infront Sports & Media.
Entries for the 2027 edition of RideCymru are scheduled to go on sale this September.
