IRONMAN reports economic boost for events across Poland

IRONMAN races generated €9.6 million in measurable economic benefits for the Polish cities and regions that hosted them, according to a Deloitte report. The report was prepared for IRONMAN’s local event organiser in Poland, Sport Evolution.

Cities that host IRONMAN events in Poland gain in two ways, the report concluded: increased economic activity leads to higher tax revenues, and extensive media coverage results in promotional campaigns worth millions.

The organisation of events such as the IRONMAN Poland series extends beyond simple sport competition. Each event engages not only the event organiser, but also local and national businesses. These activities help to generate real income for city coffers.

The event organiser rents sports facilities, uses local road and energy infrastructure, and hires personnel to support the event. Event participants and their companions become customers of local gastronomy, hotels, and public transport.

The sum of income from these areas generated an estimated €9,574,000 of added value for the local economies of Warsaw, Kraków, and Poznań in the 2025 season.

Each IRONMAN event takes place over just one day. However, participant surveys show that athletes typically spend at least three nights in the host city. Most international participants bring two or three accompanying people.

Deloitte estimates that each competitor generates €2,069 in additional turnover for the local economy.

The financial benefit for the cities hosting the races is also significant. The generated advertising equivalent, together with the increase in tax revenues associated with IRONMAN Poland, totalled an estimated €2,044,000 for the three cities studied.

More broadly, the races contributed to the generation of value across the entire Polish economy. According to the Deloitte report, foreign tourists travelling for the races created a demand impulse valued at €4,757,000.

The IRONMAN team in Poland adds that its event brand offers powerful promotional opportunities. The advertising equivalent – the amount that would have to be paid to achieve the same media exposure value for the host cities – reached an estimated €1,608,000.

Institute of Media Monitoring data covers only the coverage generated in Poland and by Polish recipients. However, Poles made up only about 60% of IRONMAN participants in the analysed cities. This means the actual promotional effect – for both sponsors and cities – is likely much greater, particularly in Western European countries, which supplied most of the foreign participants.

According to the Deloitte report, over 38 million people had contact with publications concerning the IRONMAN races in Poland this season. The tone of these publications was positive or neutral, which is seen as another important factor for the host cities.

The report also pointed out the value of IRONMAN to sponsors, citing the example of Enea. As the main sponsor, Enea gained from media reach, which accounted for 84.5% of the reach generated by the entire event. It also benefited from branding activities such as logos on race kits, medals, and backpacks, and during the event’s advertising campaigns.

Specialists at Deloitte indicated that the Enea IRONMAN 70.3 Poznań race led to 757,550 contacts with the Enea logo, which translated into a brand image value of €284,000. The event’s advertising campaigns generated an image value for the Enea brand of €669,000.

The Deloitte report concludes that the IRONMAN Poland event series significantly impacts the economy of local governments. It is also an important driver for both local businesses and large companies involved in event sponsorship.

The report noted that while it is difficult to quantify, the races also contribute to public health and reduce public healthcare expenditure, linking physical activity to less absenteeism in the workplace.

A comparison with similar sports events, such as the Berlin Marathon, which has an estimated economic value of over €496 million, suggests that the Polish market still has significant growth potential.
