Packed elite field lining up at 2026 IRONMAN World Championship in Kona

As one of the pinnacle events in the triathlon calendar, the eyes of many fans will be on Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, on Saturday, October 10, 2026, as more than 100 top male and female professional triathletes gather for the 2026 IRONMAN World Championship.

Organised by IRONMAN, the event will see both the women’s and men’s professional fields go head-to-head on the same day. The race also serves as the final event of the 2026 Experience Oman IRONMAN Pro Series, with 6,000 points on the line to crown the overall series champions.

The professional fields will compete for a share of a US$375,000 prize purse in each race, with the winners taking home US$125,000.

In the women’s event, reigning IRONMAN World Champion Solveig Løvseth headlines the field. Løvseth will wear bib number one following her debut victory in 2025, where she crossed the line in 8:28:27. The Norwegian athlete has maintained her form into the 2026 season with victories at the Memorial Hermann IRONMAN Texas North American Championship and the IRONMAN Hamburg European Championship.

Two-time IRONMAN Pro Series champion Kat Matthews returns after a second-place finish in Kona last year. Matthews has secured three victories in 2026, including wins at ANZCO Foods IRONMAN New Zealand, IRONMAN 70.3 Geelong and IRONMAN 70.3 Elsinore.

2024 IRONMAN World Champion Laura Philipp will make her fifth appearance in Kona following a third-place finish last year and a recent victory at IRONMAN Kalmar. Former world champion Lucy Charles-Barclay, 2022 winner Chelsea Sodaro and Taylor Knibb also return to the start line.

Making their IRONMAN World Championship debuts are Canada’s Paula Findlay, who won Athletic Brewing IRONMAN Lake Placid in July 2026, and Paris 2024 Olympic Games silver medallist Julie Derron, who qualified following a victory at IRONMAN Switzerland. Hannah Berry and Lisa Perterer, who finished fourth and fifth respectively last year, also return.
 

In the men’s field, the Norwegian trio of Casper Stornes, Gustav Iden and Kristian Blummenfelt lead the seeding following a podium sweep in Nice last year. Stornes, the defending world champion, recorded his first full-distance victory at the event and has since won the Mainova IRONMAN Frankfurt European Championship in 2026.

Iden, the 2022 world champion, finished second in Nice and placed second at IRONMAN Frankfurt earlier this year. Meanwhile, Blummenfelt, who was third in Nice, has taken victories in 2026 at Geelong, Oceanside and Texas.

Belgium’s Marten Van Riel will make his first trip to Kailua-Kona after placing fourth in Nice last year, entering the event following 2026 wins at IRONMAN 70.3 Elsinore and IRONMAN Lake Placid. Former world champions Patrick Lange and Sam Laidlow are also set to compete. For Lange, a three-time champion, the 2026 event will mark his final race in Hawaii.

The men’s lineup includes the top 15 finishers from the 2025 world championship, including Jonas Schomburg, Nick Thompson and Matthew Marquardt. A strong American contingent will feature Matt Hanson and Trevor Foley, who currently occupy the top two positions in the IRONMAN Pro Series standings.

The race starts in Kailua Bay with a 3.8km swim course, followed by a 180km bike course to Hawi through lava fields and coastal terrain. The final leg is a 42.2km run course ending on Ali’i Drive.
