British eyewear brand SunGod has unveiled the Velans 2 sunglasses, billed as an evolution of its best-selling design and redesigned for improved stability alongside universal helmet compatibility.
SunGod notes that the new model, which launched this week, builds on a design used by professional athletes to secure Olympic gold and Grand Tour podiums. It is already the choice of riders across SunGod’s sponsored teams, such as INEOS Grenadiers, SD-Worx ProTime, and Unibet Rose Rockets.
According to the company, a secure fit on any head shape is achieved through an ergonomically remodelled arm and temple profile. This includes new Temple-Lock arms and stability fins, which were developed based on athlete feedback and testing.
The sunglasses weigh 26g and feature Pop-Lock hinges to reinforce the frame at its most vulnerable points. The wraparound lens shape uses the brand’s proprietary 8KO nylon-based lenses, which according to the company provide up to 70% clearer vision than industry standard polycarbonate lenses.
Integrated vents are included in the lens profile to provide ventilation and prevent fogging. Customers can also choose the 8KO IRIS Photochromic lens option.
The Velans 2 uses Infinite Recycled Frame material, which has a carbon footprint that is claimed to be seven times lower than virgin plastic. SunGod is a certified B Corp and was awarded the King’s Award for Sustainable Development in May 2023.
Ed Watkiss, Head of Product at SunGod, said “We came to cycling with a new benchmark when we released the original Velans sunglasses five years ago, but innovation and improvements never stop. For over a year now we’ve been working on an evolution of this rider favourite, taking on both athlete and customer feedback to enhance fit both on the face and when ‘parked’ in the helmet too.”
Seven colourways are available, including Black Smoke, White Gold, Neon Yellow, Neon Blue, Black, Glacier Blue, and Black Forest Green.
Pricing for the Velans 2 starts at US$160 / £125/ €155, with customisation available for an additional US$25 / £10 / €25. The IRIS Photochromic lens option is priced at US$210 / £165 / €200.
As with all products from the brand, the sunglasses are guaranteed for life, with SunGod offering to repair or replace damaged frames free of charge.
SunGod was founded in 2013 and has headquarters in London and Verbier, Switzerland. In addition to a number of tie-ups with endurance sport teams and athletes it partners with international teams such as McLaren F1 Team and England Cricket.
