IRONMAN has announced its debut event in Romania with the launch of IRONMAN 70.3 Mamaia-Constanța. Taking place on Sunday, September 26, 2027, the triathlon marks the first IRONMAN 70.3 race to be held in the Black Sea and will offer qualifying slots for the 2028 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship.
General registration for the event opens on October 8, 2026. The course features a 1.9km single-loop swim in the Black Sea off the Mamaia coastline, followed by a flat 90km single-loop cycle route heading into the historic city of Constanța. The event finishes with a 21.1km run along the Mamaia promenade.
Located on Romania’s Black Sea coast, Mamaia-Constanța is known for its long sandy beaches and unique position between the Black Sea and Lake Siutghiol. The destination combines a seaside setting, alongside cultural heritage and modern tourism infrastructure. Mamaia-Constanța welcomes millions of visitors each year and is accessible through Mihail Kogălniceanu International Airport, as well as extensive road and rail connections.
Beyond race day, visitors can explore the city’s historic Old Town, architecture, marina, museums, restaurants and beaches, making it a destination for athletes travelling with friends and family.
The IRONMAN Group reports that participation in IRONMAN 70.3 events continues to rise, with more than 20 European races in the 2027 series already sold out. The introduction of this new event offers athletes an additional late-season opportunity to race in Central Europe next year.
The addition of Romania to the IRONMAN 70.3 calendar further expands the sport’s footprint, bringing the IRONMAN experience to a new nation and showcasing a destination that remains largely unexplored by the international triathlon community.
Thomas Veje Olsen, Managing Director for IRONMAN Europe, Middle East and Africa, said “The demand for races across Europe continues to increase, providing us with an opportunity to explore new destinations for our athletes. Mamaia-Constanța delivers exactly that, with its stunning Black Sea coastline, rich history and welcoming atmosphere. The launch of IRONMAN 70.3 Mamaia-Constanța marks an exciting milestone for us as we bring the IRONMAN brand to Romania for the very first time.”
Race Director, Gabriel Soloman, added “Bringing the IRONMAN 70.3 Series to the Black Sea for the first time is a truly special moment for us. Mamaia-Constanța offers a rare combination: the energy of one of Romania’s most iconic seaside destinations, the history of Constanța, a city with more than 2,000 years of heritage, and a fast, accessible course designed to give athletes a memorable race experience.
“But beyond the sea, the course and the destination, this event is also an invitation to discover Romania and its people. We want athletes from Romania and around the world to feel challenged by the race, inspired by the Black Sea, and genuinely welcomed by the warmth, openness and spirit that define this place. We cannot wait to welcome the IRONMAN community to Mamaia-Constanța.”
