The Professional Triathletes Organisation (PTO) has announced a number of updates to its World Ranking System (WRS) for the 2026 season.
According to the event organiser, these changes, developed in collaboration with the PTO Athlete Board, are designed to reflect a shift in professional racing patterns, specifically the increased frequency of high-level competition.
Core changes to the ranking system
The primary adjustment to the 2026 system is an increase in the number of scoring events. For the first time, an athlete’s PTO World Ranking will be calculated based on the average of their best four results within a rolling 52-week period, up from the previous requirement of three races.
The PTO noted that this change follows a clear trend in the sport: the average number of race finishes per year for the top 10 ranked athletes has risen from 5.8 in 2022 to 7.6 in 2025. This increase is largely attributed to the establishment of the T100 Triathlon World Tour and the IRONMAN Pro Series.
Key updates include:
- Four-Race Average: Rankings are now based on an athlete’s best four scores rather than three.
- Distance Flexibility: There is no limit on the number of full-distance or middle-distance events that can count toward the four results.
- Removal of Gold Tier Bonus: The previous 5% bonus awarded for an athlete’s single best performance, in Gold or lower-tier events, has been abolished to prevent score inflation and simplify the system.
- System Foundation: The scoring mechanics remain a composite of race position, strength of field (SOF), and race time.
Impact on T100 selection and pathways
The updated World Ranking System (WRS) will play a key role in the 2026 T100 Triathlon World Tour. While the top 10 athletes in the ‘T100 Race to Qatar’ standings receive automatic offers, eight slots per race will now be filled based specifically on the PTO World Rankings.
Furthermore, the PTO confirmed that the Contender Ranking system used during 2025 has been discontinued for 2026. The WRS now serves as the primary pathway for athletes aiming to secure starts in the T100 series.
Sam Renouf, PTO CEO, said “Since the PTO World Ranking System was first introduced, the Athlete Board has listened to athlete feedback and monitored racing trends to ensure the system fits the current racing environment.
“Having a way to consistently rank athlete performances is a cornerstone of many sports and even more important in long-distance triathlon across different race types and series.”
The PTO Athlete Board added “The updates… reflect the changing sport with athletes racing more and the T100 and IRONMAN Pro Series becoming established on the professional calendar… the removal of the 5% bonus on certain races makes it simpler and easier to understand for athletes and fans.”
