Strava rolls out ‘Instant Workouts’ feature for subscribers worldwide

Strava Instant Workouts

Strava has announced the global rollout of Instant Workouts, a new subscription-based feature designed to provide personalised activity recommendations based on an athlete’s prior training data.

The feature, which appears in a carousel at the top of the Home feed, aim to reduce ‘decision fatigue’ for users by suggesting specific sessions across more than 40 different sport types.

The launch follows a trial in late 2025, during which running and weight training emerged as the most popular recommendations. According to the platform, which now claims to have 180 million users worldwide, early feedback from the trial group was 85% positive.

Personalised Training Intent
The Instant Workouts feature categorises suggestions into four primary intents, helping athletes align their daily movement with their weekly goals:

  • Maintain: Sessions designed to keep current fitness levels steady
  • Build: Workouts intended to increase performance or endurance
  • Explore: Recommendations focused on new sports or discovering new routes
  • Recover: Lower-intensity activities to aid physical and mental rebuilding

Integrated Features and Expert Guidance
The new tool leverages Strava’s extensive Heatmap data to generate routes for GPS-based activities, such as cycling and running. These routes are customised to the specific workout and start from the user’s current location.

Additionally, the feature includes ‘Recommendation Context’, which provides a rationale for each suggestion. This explains the specific benefits of a recommended session and how it fits into the user’s recent activity history.

For some subscribers, the weekly carousel will include expert-led sessions from partners. This includes content from Runna, the personalised coaching app that was acquired by Strava in April 2025.

Future Updates and Wearable Integration
Strava has confirmed that the Instant Workouts feature will continue to evolve throughout early 2026. Future updates are expected to include:

  • Device Integration: The ability to send recommended workouts directly to Garmin and Apple Watch devices.
  • Guided Sessions: Improved step-by-step guidance to support athletes during their activities.

The launch comes at a period of high activity for the San Francisco-based company. Following its acquisition of Runna and the cycling training app The Breakaway, reports indicate that Strava has recently filed confidentially for an initial public offering (IPO), potentially targeting a listing as early as spring 2026.
